I think I am going to start doing a day here and there called "Remembering Mom." She is where I got my love of fabric and quilting in general. And the attitude that I can make my own patterns. She had this saying that if you hadn't made a mistake, then you hadn't ever done anything. Only that is not exactly her words...
This is the quilt that I lost for several years. This picture is probably the day I found it or the next...it was a dark dreary day...I had my husband hold it off the end of the porch. It is not a great picture....but you can at least see why I was upset. I can actually remember being very small when my mom pieced this quilt. I was probably 5 or 6 years old and can remember sitting in the floor at her feet playing with other scraps.
I don't know where she got all the red material...I don't ever remember her just going and buying yardage of fabric except for muslin or else for making our clothes. Her quilts were almost entirely of scraps. They were by no means perfect but I loved them all. We always chose our favorite block when the quilt top was finished. She always had several tops waiting to be quilted....in fact I am not sure how many were/are still there after her death.
I tell my brother I would love to have pictures of all the quilts she has made, and know where they all are. She made a bunch in her life...it was truly her passion. A lot were quilted, but she also tied a lot. She gave a lot away as graduation presents...I could not even begin to think of who all received them for that. I think all the grand kids have at least one...and most of us children do.

  1. Rose what a wonderful idea to post the "Remembering Mom" to your blog. It brings back memories of my mom and the things I miss!

Your comments about quilts for family brings thoughts of HOW PAINFUL it was to see the hurt in the eyes of my husband as he watched his sister *snatch* up the quilts that my DMIL had created. My DMIL gave many quilts to others... but what remained at the time of preparing for public auction were actually *taken* by my SIL and she was greedy enough to give NO THOUGHT to others. I tell my hubby "she needs to live with what she did" (meaning SIL)... but it still hurts I am sure! I plan to make sure MY FAMILY ALL HAVE QUILTS FROM ME because of his pain!

I love your idea of the tribute, please do more!

Have a GREAT DAY, and do something with fabric!

  2. I have two good quilts--meaning ones that are hand quilted--from my mom. That is one for each of my daughters. I do have others that are tied that we use...one I remember helping her tie. If my nieces and nephews of my one sister didn't have good quilts from their grandma, I would have almost felt obligated to give my sister one of these...but since her kids have quilts, I don't. I don't know if that is the right way to feel, but it is how I feel.

I am not sure she would have taken it--I think she wanted mom to actually give her one. Mom gave me these when she seen how much I loved them. I may have even ask if they could be mine when she made the tops.

  3. I love your mom's quilt! I can well see why you would be upset about not being able to find it. I love your memories of your mom and her quilting.
