Round barn re-visited

I made a small post about this barn HERE....in it I stated that it is in the northern part of Vermillion county. I don't know why I made that statement...I know that Vermillion county is on the west side of the Wabash River, and this barn is on the east side. In Parke County.
We took a drive last week and ended up passing by it again. I took the opportunity to stop and take some new pictures.
Information in the book A Round Indiana by John T. Hanou states it was built in 1895 and believed to be the first true circular barn built in Indiana.
I am so glad that it is still standing. At one time, there were 8 of these round barns in Parke County. Now there is this one, and maybe one other if nothing has happened to it since the book was written. I have never had the luck to run across the other though.

  1. Very nice photos of an interesting structure, Rose. I'm wondering what the advantage would be in building a round barn. Just to be different?

    Nice post.

  2. I love these shots Rose!
Wouldn't it be grand to turn this into a place to live?
I hope it stands for a long time.

  3. Very intriguing. And raises the question (a kind of tongue in cheek one) How do you put a rectangular door in a round barn? I can see that someone has figured it out :-)

  4. That is a beautiful barn! I think round barns are fascinating! There used to be a couple of round barns down here, but I don't think they are still standing. I'm glad you are recording them in photos before they disappear. You had me confused until I looked at the map. I'm used to the Wabash being the border between Illinois and Indiana!

  6. What a unique and attractive barn. We have a few, rare multi-sided barns around here, but none truly circular as far as I know. I often wondered why one would like a circular barn.

  7. Wow - Now THAT'S A BARN!!! I don't think I've ever seen a round barn before, but I sure like your pics of it!

On my post yesterday, you said that you could barely see my photo - I'm sorry about that. You may need to adjust the settings on your monitor, that may help because I really want everyone to see - I have the same problem w/ my computer at work - the photos appear much clearer on my computer monitor at home, so everyone kept saying, "Adjust the settings on the monitor!" And what do you know, it worked!!! hehehe

  8. LOVE this barn, Rose! It looks to be in good shape for such an old barn.

I wish the unusual barns such as this one were all maintained for future generations to see!

  10. Love these views of the round barn. Did you know they made them round to keep the devil out of the corners? That's what I heard, anyway.
