Silken beauty

I'm sorry folks, but I could not resist posting these of the milkweed. These are fresh--from this year's crop.
They were taken at Willow Slough. I definitely want to go back there some time in the future.
After these I have just a few more to show from there, and none of them spectacular, but hopefully I will have time to write a little bit about the place.
Right now I am having trouble finding the time to post or visit my regular blogs.

I think I might have created a monster...the little girl from next door has always loved going down in our basement with me. I have my sewing machines set up all the time, and she always gets up to one and pretends to sew.

So the other night, I just set down with her and let her play while keeping an eye on her...I don't want her sewing her finger. She had been here quite a while, and her mom called so I sent her home. IN just a little few minutes, she was back over here saying she could stay an hour. I told her well, not an hour, cause the Colts game was coming on. Still, we were down there for a while after it started.

Besides that it is a night before school night and she needs to be home and getting settled down. Then last night here she came and she looks at me with this gleam in her eyes, and says 'You're probably going to get mad or aggravated--I forget her exact word, but she wanted to go down and sew. So soon as I finished we went down there and played.

My question is, how much do I just let her play and how much do I really try to get her to do things right? Right now, I try to teach her for a little bit, then I just let her play. And by teaching it is things like teaching her what the pressure foot is, how to put it down, and I am trying to teach her to sew a straight seam but not having a lot of luck with that. But then we have only began.

So this is part of why I have been MIA; and right now we are getting ready to go do some shopping for stuff for Thanksgiving. Plus stuff I am out of.

  1. You're very kind to help her, Rose. Hmmmm. This is a tricky situation since obviously she craves adult attention. Don't spend more time with her than you're prepared to give. Maybe you should limit each session to 30 minutes...or whatever. Good luck.

  2. Yes, it sounds like fun up to a point, but for sure you don't want to end up being free daycare all day every day! Anyway, I always love milkweed shots, all those fluffy "tiny dancers".

  3. The milkweed pods are fantastic! Really beautiful subject! I know what you mean about having so little time to work on your blog or visit others! I was happy to see your comment on my new My World post. The little girl needs a simple machine to start with, one that sews with a chain stitch...you can sometimes find them in yard sales. That way she wouldn't sew her finger, and you wouldn't have to watch her so closely. You might want to suggest to the mother that the girl come on certain days and times for an "impromptu" sewing lesson. Just tell her that you can't always be in the basement with her little girl when she wants to come, and would prefer say, only Tuesday afternoons, or something. It sounds like the Mom is using you for some convenient (for her) babysitting! :-)

  4. I really don't mind the little girl coming--saying 'monster' was just a figure of speech. Meaning that she loves sewing right now, and I hope she stays interested in it. I do send her home occasionally, but for the most part I don't mind her being here at all.

  5. Hmmm - What does the mother say about her being at your house so much? Have you spoken to the mother or do you know her? I hope you do because I would hate to think that the mother would allow her daughter to go to a strangers home for such lengths of time.
But, I agree w/ Tour Guide, limit each session to 30 minutes or so & don't spend more time with her than you're prepared to give, because after a while of coming over so much may turn into resentment - not toward the little girl, but to her mother. But then again, I also understand you wanting to teach & spend time w/ her because it does sound like she's starved for attention.

I've got to find some milkweed around here - I guess I'd never really paid much attention to it. Pretty shots though!

  6. Okay Rose, don't tell all of our secrets about what we played with as kids. :) I can remember going out and getting those milkweed pods and blowing them in the air to see if they would catch a breeze and go out of site. That was always a lot of fun.

  8. Love this new "crop" of photos!
I really need to find me some and try a pic or two.

I think Rose you should decide how much time to spend with your little friend but I do think you should give those little lessons before she 'plays.' She should understand it's not a toy as such.
Pity her Mom doesn't spend that kind of time with her.

  10. Lovely photos Rose, I love your milkweeds, and as for the little girl, I think it's great that you let her spend time with you, just so long as it's on your terms and not on her mother's. You seem to be striking a happy balance and I think you have good instincts. I bet all mother's wish they had a real nice lady like you living next door. My neighbor was Mrs. Brown, my boy never wondered over to her house because he was too young but the three of us used to get together every now and again and our gardens were adjoining and we would do a little gardening together, while my son played under our watchful eyes. She is a special memory for all of us. We still use the blanket she crocheted which she gave as a Christmas present, it's on my lap right now. That was almost 28 years' ago. Thank you for dropping by my blog. I don't know if you are in the US or if you celebrate Thanksgiving but if you are, have a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving.
