Waiting on spring....

I am looking out on a frozen world this a.m. It is supposed to get above freezing today...maybe by the end of the day most of the snow will be gone. Need I tell you that there are chances of snow next week? About the time it starts to disappear we get more.

However, we have a long way to go before we even begin to compare with the Blizzard of '78. We were young whippersnappers back then...both Roger and I worked at CBS. The factory...where vinyl records and cassettes were made...also where the record club was that everyone belonged to....at 1400 North Fruitridge Ave., Terre Haute, Indiana.

There was a record snowfall...15.5 inches in a single snow...20 inches on the ground was the most recorded. I heard on the news the other night that there was 20 ft. drifts. I read where the airport recorded gusts of wind up to 55 mph...

CBS actually closed down...for at least one day if not two....that was something that just never happened. Roads going east and west would be clear....but the ones going north and south would have snow drifts higher than the roof of our truck.

I don't recall a lot of details....just the joy of getting a day or two off work. And I remember playing in the snow....but I remember the 'feel' of the blizzard. I know lots of businesses closed around town. People just simply could not get to work...schools were closed. Cars were stranded around town.

That was before the era of everyone having front wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Roger had bought a 4-wheel drive truck right before we got married and people kind of laughed about it...you know the type of sneering laugh of why do you think you need that? Not that it could go through 20 ft. snow drifts, but it could and did go a lot of places normal cars did not go.

So, I guess I should complain....we could have another blizzard.

  2. That is a cold picture. Cold to us here is 20degrees F. I don't think it has ever gotten below 0--but maybe before my time. I know when my eldest about 2yrs we had record colds 9 degrees F. It's all relative isn't it. MB

  3. I hope you don't have another blizzard -- I'm afraid the spillover might get down here. We've had two days of nice weather. I could get used to that.

  4. This past week we dropped below zero, and it was very cold! We have been having weekly snowstorms, and another predicted for this week! It is a good thing that I like snow, but it is best when I can stay home and not need to head to the office! Stay warm, hugs for sweet little Lorelei!

  5. Another lovely farm shot Rose!
Christmas evening we got 14 inches at my daughter's in Virginia. It hadn't snowed that much in almost 30 years - the year my son was born in between two blizzards.
Of course there they don't have snow often so things were at a standstill for a few days.
It was 45 here today and much of our snow melted. Like you said - until next week.

  6. What a beautiful photo, it screams "winter" to me.

And, thank you for your memories of the Blizzard of 78. North of Boston we got over 30" of snow in that storm, and the state essentially closed down for 7 days, and limped for another 7, with the governor issuing a "no driving" order. It was fantastic, I was a single girl living in an apartment 4 blocks from the ocean, and all I remember of it was fun, fun, fun. That was not true for most of the people impacted by the storm. There were lives lost, homes destroyed, the fishing fleet was crippled.

My car got buried by the plow cleaning our lot, and I didn't see it again until the end of March and didn't care. I took the train into Boston for work, so didn't need it. Carefree days they were!

  7. You remember a lot. And what I love about your stories are the little details that really bring them to life.

I remember the record club...belonged to it for awhile!

It sounds like you're going to get more snow in the next day or two. I think we'll miss the cold weather this go-round.

Your photo really captures the frosty morning!

  8. Great barn! I remember the blizzard of 78 a little, but it wasn't as bad down here. I hate really big snow storms or ice.

  9. I hope you don't get any record snowfalls today, Rose! The winds can create dreadfully high drifts, that's for sure!
