Typical fall day....

We are at Sarah's house....as you can see I am at blogger!  They got a router, and I brought my net book so here I am.  For how long I don't know.  The toot is napping...it is late...we don't know if she will just sleep through the night or if she will wake up and then want to stay up all night.

It has been a typical fall day--beautiful weather to be outside in.  We sat for an hour or two out back...laughing at Lorelei and Otto...

Roger and I went for a drive yesterday...didn't really see much...except a lot of buzzards.  We went over into Illinois and then back north of Danville to that Eagle and Heron viewing station, that we went to a while back.  And it just this second dawned on me that I forgot to take a picture of the viewing platform...again.  For someone who likes to take photos as a way to document things now, I can sure ignore the obvious sometimes.
**************
I wonder...what are your reasons for taking photographs?  It is hard to explain how I feel about photography.  I like to take pictures to show the beauty of things as I see them...to capture a moment in time.

But more than that, I feel this need to document things as they are now.  Yet I don't do enough of the actual documenting.  The little town I live in has changed so much in the past 35 years....you just would not believe the changes.  It is hardly recognizable in some ways.  The main business area is only  about three blocks long....one side of the street hardly has any buildings left that was there when I moved here.  The other side has several buildings missing...and I don't have a single photograph from back then.

Then there is photographing people.  I just don't take people's photographs.   Or very, very seldom.  Oh, I don't mind Lorelei and Sarah and Roger...cause I know they don't mind.  Nor would Jeremy if he were there when I had the camera...but other than them...I don't have the nerve.  I think because I always hated my own being taken.  Though I did not mind so much if someone snapped a photo while I was doing something and did not ask me to pose.

Yet I love looking back at old photographs of people....and places and things.  They are a way of connecting with our past.

  1. Hi Rose, I know you are having a great time with the Toot....

I love photography.. Even when I was a little girl, I loved looking through old photos that my parents had... I never thought about 'doing' photography myself until I started blogging...

Then I got interested in sharing more of my life and travels with others... I LOVE it!!!!
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  2. I feel pretty much the same way you do about photography. Glad to see they got a router! For my next laptop, I have been thinking about a netbook, but I guess that is not your primary computer? Could it be?

  4. I have lived in our wee town since I was 8 - that's over 40 years :O It has changed a lot over the years and I wish I had pictures from way back then so that I could see the differences.
I love looking at pictures. I have soooo many photo albums and pictures lying around. I really must sort them all out.

  5. i moved here from Savannah Ga 27 years ago, in that 27 Savannah has become a strange place to me, to get lost in. i drove right by the street to my cousins house, because my dad's house and the 4 beside it were torn down and they build a strip shopping center. the two lanes in front of the house are now 6 lanes. and here in Bradenton each time we head East it has changed so much we gawk as we drive.
i do not take people photos, mainly because they don't interest me like nature and objects do. I love nature and also love to document what i do and where i go. as for the reason i love photography, it is simply that the ordinary mundane things I see, become beautiful and extraordinary in a photo. i like to snap and then look at it on the screen to see what I captures. pieces of things fascinate me and I love others photos because we all SEE things others done and SEE them in different ways.

  6. The buzzard's wings make a fine pattern against the sky. I think I basically like to take pretty pictures with the best technical quality I'm capable of. One of the best parts is the way a photographer simply sees and notices things other pass by without a glance.

  7. Glad you can post from Sarah's now!

I think I like photography for lots of reasons but one main one is because it makes me notice the world around me more. I LOVE seeing new things (even the obvious ones that others have noticed many times before me) and then finding out more about them.

  8. Happy Belated Birthday Rose! I was away and didn't see your post. Hope it was happy. I should remember yours from now on. You, little Sammy, my stepdad and hubby all have birthdays in one week's time. :)
I take photos to document things I've seen and places I've been. Blogging helps make sure I do go out with the camera. After retiring it gives me something to do with my time. Quite frankly, I don't know what I'd do without this hobby. :)

  9. When I get my camera in my hands, I just want to photograph everything. I see so much more now that I carry around a camera. I look at houses and details and buildings and everything in nature. I want to capture it all...but wonder what on earth it is all good for once I have it. My kids will probably throw out all the photos when I die....most are just on the computer. I used to take mostly people photos, but now the people I care about are not around and don't want their photos taken when they are around. So I photograph birds and butterflies and creatures :-)
