Another rainy day

Last night I was distracted...I was trying to start this little coiled mat...
I could not even get that first little center section of the tan done.  My machine kept dropping the bobbin thread.  I kept trying different things and nothing worked.  I decided to give up after a while and wait till today.  This last photo were after two or three hours today...
I discovered that my machine does not like for me to slow down.  It sews fine until I slow down and then either it drops/skips a stitch or the top thread breaks.

This thing is probably about 8 or 10 inches across...I am not sure what I am going to do with it.  The clothesline I am wraping in fabric is not cotton, so not sure how it would hold up as a mat for setting hot pots on.  Still, I like it....

  1. I really like it! I've always wanted to try making a mat like that.

  2. This is great. I would love to sew this too but my sewing machine is an one fashioned one that can only sew straight lines.

  3. It is very pretty. I have also seen ones similar to this that are filled with cinnamon potpourri. The hot pot makes the cinnamon smell good!

  4. It's very pretty Rose. An interesting process and very rewarding when it was finished no doubt.

  6. This is such a lovely mat. I love your choice of colours. I think all sewing machines have their little temperamental quirks that we only get to know through time, toil and perseverance. I was lucky enough to be given my grandma's old Singer hand-turned machine that was made in 1912, and even though it only does one stitch, it has its own sweet views about how it likes to be driven along the seams. And my modern electric machine has a few peccadilloes of its own too. I can see both of them objecting to the intricacy, curves and fabric thickness adjustments that must come with this super project. Good luck!

  7. What kind of a magical needle are you using that will sew those all of this thickness. I would be breaking more than my bobbin thread. I tell you, the two of us have “perseverance” in our blood. We will not give up :-) It is so pretty. I love that blue...but I have blue everywhere.

  9. I love it. You could use it to stand a flower pot on, so it doesn't leave a mark and the mat will mop up any spilled water when watering?

  10. I like the colours a LOT! Your machine must be a very good one. I don't see how you could sew quickly when the circle is small. I should be easier as the mat grows, methinks.

  11. I like the colors of the mat. I have a round mat that I can put hot pots on.
