Were any of you ever fascinated with these old lamps?  I have loved anything that burned kerosene/coal oil since I was a child.  I know there is a difference between coal oil and kerosene but I think my mom used the words interchangeably.

I had two or three 'cheaper' versions when I was a kid.  One was a little one that was made totally of light blue glass...bought at the same Brashear's Glass Barn that we used to trade books at.  The other was a small red metal one, about half as tall as the one above.  Both were so cheaply made I probably should not have ever lit them.  I feel like I had another one but for the life of me, I cannot think what it looked like, so maybe the two are all I ever had.

They had oil in them.   I would actually burn them for a while every so often.  There was magic to lighting one of them and setting by it and pretending that was all I had to read by.  I always think of myself as not having had much of an imagination as a child, but I guess I pretended more than I remember most of the time.

Roger has not been feeling well since last Thursday.  We know to expect 'off' days since the stroke, but this is getting a little old.  I feel like there has been some improvement in the past couple of days though so maybe he will be back to his new normal soon.  This has been sort of like how he felt back in February when I ended up taking him to the ER.

  1. Oh Rose, I am so sorry. Maybe a visit to the doctor? If nothing else, it might set your mind at rest.

  2. My grandparents used to have a variety of oil lamps, both for inside and outside. I always love the glow they had. I hope Roger improves. Maybe a call to the doctor's office?

  3. So sorry Roger is not well; we will continue to pray for you both.
Oh, I do love the lamps and lanterns. My brother has an old glass oil lamp that he uses pretty often that belonged to mother. I think many of us who watched shows like Little House on the Prairie dream about what life was like in the old days.

  7. I am laughing at your question was I ever infaturated with kerosene lamps... at one time I had 40 of them on a wall inour house in St Pete. I collected so many, bob built ceiling to floor shelves for me to display them... now I have 7 only, to much work to keep them. I even loved the smell of kerosene burning and daddy called it coal oil to...

I remember grandpa having some lanterns like that. They do give a comforting glow.

  9. We still use oil lamps for when the power goes off. I remember in 2008 the power was off for 2 weeks and I even sewed by lamp and that gave a better appreciation of the ladies of olden days,
I think you have a great imagination because it shows in your writings.

  12. I love the lamps and we called them coal oil lamps, too. We turned them on when the electric went out. They are handy to have and I still have a couple of glass lamps.

Hope Roger will get to feeling better soon. I'll be praying for his health to improve. Take care.

  13. I HAVE a fascination with these lamps. I used to collect them long ago before the antique rage hit this area about 20 years ago. Terry and I have decided to put a couple of them out by the pond with Citronella Oil in them, possibly hanging them on short shepherd hooks or possibly 4 x 4 poles that we have out there. We ususally use them in the house when the power goes out, but I have plenty that I can use. I like rustic. Our home inside is what I call Ponderosa. Each room except the kitchen has a couple of stained and varnished barn siding. Some ceilings are as well. It's eclectic and cozy. One wall grouping in the living room is American Indian, while another corner has African Animals. Still another has birds. Everything I love.

My parents love oil lamps so I grew up surrounded by them and have a few in my home now.
    Have a good day.

  16. These golden years are sometimes not so much. Hope Roger gets back to feeling better. Take care of yourself while you are taking care of him. Love your lamp.

  17. I have one railroad lamp that I found at an old antique hole in the wall years ago. I've never lit it, but I have decorated it for Christmas by wrapping ivy and shiny leaves around it.
I'm sorry to hear Roger is not feeling a lot better. Has he had an MRI? You both are on my prayer list. I hope he feels lots better soon!

  18. How atmospheric it must have been to read by the light of an oil lamp. We still have a few of them in Ireland for when there's a power-cut.
Sorry to hear that your husband has been poorly. I hope that he feels better soon.

  19. Like the old lanterns. I can actually remember us using them when I was a kid. Also had lights running in the ceiling at one place. The gas came from old oil wells excess gas.
