Do you do this...

Do you save change?  If you have, have you always?   Mom always had a dime bank, and I did always give her my dimes.  But I did not become a change saver till around 1981-2.  And I have never stopped.  At first it was just dimes.

At some point it morphed into saving all change.  At first I just threw it all in one bank.  And I  had an actual bank to begin with...I remember taping across the plug to keep it from falling out.  And I remember shaking and shaking to get the change out.

So my next question is, do you separate your change if you save it?  At some point I started taking old jars, making a slit in the lids, and they became my banks.

I don't mind cashing in pennies...in fact right now I have 4 full jars I should cash in.  But I like to keep the silver coins.   It gives a whole new spin to the phrase 'cold, hard cash.'

******************

I have did three more of these leaves...I added a few more that I had already done.  I need to take time and put them all on the design wall. One thing apparent here is the big polka-dot ones really stand out.  I forget what famous quilter said if a certain fabric stands out like a sore thumb, to just add more...that it will recede and become part of the background.

I know one thing for sure, I like dots. Circles.  I have thought about doing a circles quilt at some point.  I really would like to do that.

I need to settle down and watch the new/weather...hope you all have a good day tomorrow.

  1. It just gets more beautiful and vibrant. I don't collect coins, but I should! Your bottles are interesting as well.

  2. I love the dots. Yes, definitely add more! No, I don't save coins, and actually, sometimes, hold up the line at the register digging in my purse to make exact change! :~) I do, however, save all the five dollar bills I can, then give them away at Christmas time when the family plays Bingo.

  3. You brought back some memories for me when you mentioned saving dimes and having a dime bank. When my Grandmother was young she saved dimes until she had enough to buy a Featherweight sewing machine! (this was in the 50's when they were new). She later gave that machine to me and I sure do love it. When I was little I had a dime bank - an old tin one that would register the amount of money.

I used to save pennies in a giant water bottle but that thing got so heavy I could barely pick it up! I don't really save change much now except I keep a piggy bank by the washer and dryer to collect coins my husband leaves in his clothes.

Your quilt is just beautiful! I love your color combinations. A circle quilt would be interesting. I bought a circle cutter for fabric last year and it actually works pretty good. Take care Rose!

  5. I always saved change. I have quite a bit around here and figure I will NEVER be totally broke! I have a ton of pennies I need to turn in - but boy or boy will that be a job.
    Have a good day.

  6. My mother used to save dimes, not sure why. I use my quarters for toll roads. Your leaves are so pretty. Enjoy your day, wishing you a great weekend!

I do have an old tin which receives anything smaller than a 10p coin. That is not often though, as I deal very little in cash these days. The 'tap and go' using the debit card has become one of my favourite technical innovations!

I really like your patchwork blocks - the dots do stand out, but not so much as to unbalance the whole (at least, based on what can be determined from the image). YAM xx

  8. I like polka dots too.. your quilts are always wonderful. I wish I could quilt or sew.. we have always had several jars of coins, we put pennies together but the others all go in one jar. I used to spend them when got enough. I once paid 179.00 in rolled coins to a used furniture store for a trundle bed. I asked if she would take the coins and she said money is money. we don't have change to save now. I use only debit cards or credit cards. it is rare to use cash. I carry a 20 with me but rarely break it. if I go to dollar tree and it is under 5 dollars I will break the 20 and on the rare occasion I use cash I put the coins in jars. in the past while rasing kids I could not save them because every coin was spent just to live.

  9. We have always saved change, all thrown in together. Canada now has one dollar and two dollar coins but no pennies. The change adds up, however the grandkids help alleviate the problem.

  10. I have always saved change. I just don't even know why. I used to cash in at the end of each year and spend it on Christmas presents. Now I hardly ever use cash. I only keep enough in my wallet for a tip. I refuse to add tips to a credit/debit card.

If I have made one pseudo resolution, it's to cash in my change never to save it again. Well, maybe I'll save quarters. I can use them at the car wash.

  11. No, I've never saved change. On the contrary, I just want to get rid of it as fast as possible before my purse gets jammed with the stuff. Pennies and twopences are really hard to get rid of since prices so often get rounded up to the nearest five pence.

  12. I never saved change until I got married. Jake had been saving just quarter for many years and about once a year he cashed them in for something special. Once married we had a large jar and saved all change. Before Christ as we would cash it in and use that money for much of our shopping. Another neat story is that the last time Jake counted his change, was about a month or so before he died. He instructed me to use that money to buy an iPad. The iPads had just come out a short while before that and he knew I really wanted one. Needless to say it was a very special gift for me and still is.

  13. I save all the coins I find on my walks in old glass banks. Don't separate the different coins.

We get banks from our church and put our change in them. Then when the missionaries come visit during Missions Conference week we all give them the banks of change.

  14. All the loose change in my purse goes into a special tin, and when it is full I take it to the bank to convert it into notes - and then spend it and start the process all over again!

  15. I don`t save coins as such but when Canada announced that pennies were being phased out I began to keep those. In a big jar, which I managed to fill.

  16. I don't save any coins. I seem to spend the money as fast as I get it. Or I have a hole in my pocket---haha. I like to have various coins in my pocket at all times---I like to give the right amount at the store if I can.

  17. We also save change and place all in one container. Then we count them and place them in packs to exchange with a friend who is a food vendor who needs the small change for her business.

  18. I have a huge antique-ish jar that I use to keep the change from my car change compartment in. When it gets almost too heavy to pick up I cash it in to the bank and buy myself something I've been wanting. The last time it was a camera for over $500! It's now about a quarter full. No pennies allowed. My husband gets those, lol.

    Your quilt is lovely!

  20. Our smallest coin value in New Zealand is 10c, everything is either rounded up or down. Our coins: 10c, 20c, 50c $1 & $2. After that they've in notes. I was going to say paper, but I think it's a kind of plastic and it doesn't fold well!

I do occasionally find too many coins in my purse and I transfer them, then when I look short in said purse, I put a few more back in.

We aren't really encouraged to use actual money, rather everything is with a card...
