Want to share your thoughts?

I just remembered I had not showed these...I think if it was convenient, that I would buy myself cut flowers every now and then.  They brighten up a room so...why wait till someone dies to give flower

*************
I saw an interesting post on another blog, I have commented a time or two on the  blog but never got any kind of response*, never a return visit...never a reply through email...but I still go and read every now and then.  Her post was about finding books to read.

Her topic was books to read and how she finds them.

1.  If you like to read,  how do you decide what to read?

2.  Do you have a certain genre of books you like to read or do you read two or three types or a wide variety?

3.  Do you still go to the library?

4.  I know at least one of you wants an actual book to read...one of my daughters is the same way.  I was the same way for a long time and resisted getting a kindle.  But then I started noticing all the old books I could get free.  So, I got it for those if nothing else.  Then found out it was so much easier on my eyes.  I could read a lot longer. Next, I found newsletters that give links to books that are on sale, or free, and have found some great books, completely free that I would never have bought.

There is the other side of that coin though...some books I want both the hard copy and the digital.

But there are some that I would never have found a hard copy.

Another thing, do you still buy and/or read magazines?  I bought two quilt magazines last year, for the first time in years. I do still have a wide variety of quilt magazines here at home, and some I actually do go back and read or look at for inspiration.  Some I have given to one of my daughters.  But I never throw quilt magazines away.  If I don't want them, some quilter will.

    I agree about the flowers.

I have bought a few hard copy books over the past couple of years - but only because I couldn't get them on Kindle. Otherwise, I favour the e-reader; but have also found that I cannot keep up my reading the way I once did. Not entirely sure why... I like a good murder mystery, science fiction (not fantasy) and informational/textbooks. I can't tell you when last I stepped into a library. Or bought a magazine - I never really did mags anyway. YAM xx

  2. Usually the cover of a book grabs my attention or someone I know has read it. I like a physical book and I usually buy them. When looking, I turn to the middle of the book and read a page or two. If it grabs me, I buy it.

I like biographies, modern fiction (some of the fluff type) and a little bit of non-fiction thrown in, if the topic grabs me.

I do go to the library and miss it terribly since it is shut down. I do still read a few magazines, mostly Eating Well and a couple of knitting magazines. I don't read nearly as many as I used to. They have become quite expensive and they are mostly just ads and ads disguised as articles.

Hope you have a good weekend. Your flowers are lovely.

  3. Your flowers are so pretty! I think they brighten up a room, too. I don't read as much as I once did but I often enjoy looking at vintage books at the thrift or antique stores. I sometimes buy back issues of magazines at the thrift store for just pocket change. It's fun to look for recipes, crafts, etc. Hope you are enjoying your day.

  5. For books, I usually rely on word of mouth and book reviews. I used to love reading the book review sections in the Washington Post and the New York times. But what with newspapers being on hard times, they don't publish the book reviews anymore. I love the feel and smell of new books, so do not have a Kindle. Yes, I still love leafing thru magazines. I got a free trial of Amazon Prime, and they have offered really popular magazines for $5.00 a year. Needless to say I have taken advantage of that!

  6. I'm one who likes to read the actual book. Seems easier on the eyes to me and I just like books.
I have a shelf full of books to read that I've gotten at yard sales and at the bargain section of a book store.
Don't buy any more books now a days.
I've always gone to the library and that is where I get my books to read now.
I just walk into the library and come out with a bunch of books that catch my attention that are sitting out.
Read books for my book club and also on others recommendations.
Finding a book to read is not a problem I have. :)

No, I don't read magazines. Just not enough time!

  7. Hi Rose, your flowers are lovely! I do love to have fresh flowers occasionally. You asked some interesting questions about books and reading!

I usually read fiction and I jump back and forth on different kinds of fiction. For a long time I was a big reader of Stephen King and enjoyed many of his books. Other times I like historical fiction and sometimes I will get stuck on one author for awhile. I do buy non-fiction books occasionally and those would be quilting, sewing, cooking or some other "how-to" book. I used to buy a lot of my fiction books in paperback form to save money but I have found that now I can't read the small print on paperbacks! I occasionally go to the library to research genealogy. We have an excellent library that is a genealogy center here.

Most of the time I read on a Kindle Paperwhite which I love because it is easier on my eyes and I can easily enlarge the font. But if I'm intersted in a quilting or cooking book I will buy it in hardback.

I hardly ever buy magazines anymore because they build up so much! Like you I can never throw away a quilting magazine and I have many from when I used to get subscriptions. I love magazines but they have gotten so expensive and end up being clutter. You can get them online and on Kindle if you want to and I have done that a few times.

I enjoyed your questions and also reading other followers comments!

  8. I will start my comment with this comment, I AM CHEAP TO THE BONE..
Library books since a small child, I have never bought a hard copy book other than text books or books that were required for work .. I have always bought paper backs and not many new ones. used paper backs, used to be 4 for a dollar.. then i traded them 3 for 1. for 6 years nothing but Kindle and library and free books except I did and do pay 10 per month for Kindle unlimited on Amazon. During the past 10 weeks i have read 16 books, all fiction all the same genre and 13 of them were a series of 13 books found on Unlimted and 3 library... also might have bought maybe 5 magazines in my whole 75 years.. I dont' read magazines except People in doc office. since i don't craft or sew or knit or crochet no need for magazines. LOVE the flowers. I cam close to buying sunflowers for 16.00 at Publix last week but the CHEAP me talked me out of it. I love cut flowers but rarely buy them

  9. What beautiful flowers! I enjoy getting quilt magazines, but sometimes it gets overwhelming managing them because I want to keep them all! I like going to the library and getting physical copies of books, but I have started getting ebooks and especially audiobooks last year and more when they were closed and have really enjoyed listening to those.

  10. Hello, lovely flowers. I don't read as much as I used to, but I do listen to audio books a lot. I can't seem to find the time to read an actual book like I used to. But I can listen to an audio book while I'm sewing / cleaning / gardening / driving. I used to subscribe to several quilt magazines (and have never thrown out any - yes, I moved them all) but I noticed they started repeating patterns with newer fabrics - no thanks. The only books I buy are quilting / craft books and they have to be on sale. Love looking for bargain quilt books at junk stores.

  11. I lead a book club and we use library kits so the library is a great service to our group.

I have books downloaded to my IPad but I prefer the printed page. However, I cannot read one quarter as much as I did because of an eye problem. It will eventually be repaired when the eyes reach a certain level of bad. By that time I won’t be able to read at all. The kindle and size or even script change doesn’t help.

I always preferred mysteries though I have come to love Canadian fiction. In book club we do a variety of genres but if I choose for myself, it is Can lit now.

  12. I indirectly have a lot of flowers here, in the form of my own art works - I recently took a variety down off the walls, but I shall be putting some back. Makeover time here.

On the library, I wax and wane on going to library. Just before lockdown, I got out 3 novels, 2 of the authors I love. But they have gone back after the library return slot reopened "unread" somehow I couldn't get into them

Then this morning, it was all about e-books spurred on by a quilt blogger Tierney who happened to find a neighbouring county library (USA) who would delivery to your car/trunk (we call that your boot in NZ) and she showed us a pile she had gotten, not just quilts. So I looked at my local library and found that some were e-books - reserved two, browsed at one already today!

  13. Finally, someone who agrees with me that reading books on a Kindle or iPad is so much easier. I much prefer that way now. I have not bought a magazine in years. I used to buy some almost weekly.

  14. Our libraries are still closed due to the darn virus. I can hardly wait till they're open again. I have a long list of books that I want to request. I find that other bloggers will mention a book they've enjoyed, or I'll see that a favourite author has a book I haven't read. I even picked up a paperback at the little free library in the park this morning. Usually it's just filled with kids books but today there were some for adults too. Which reminds me that I have at least 3 books I'm done with that I can take there.
Your bouquet of flowers is amazing!!

  15. Oh thanks for fixing that print - it was difficult to read!!!
I do like to read BOOKS - I have never read a digital book. I want the real thing in my hands. I just see something that hits my fancy and that is how I decide.
I stopped magazines a couple years ago. I keep thinking about one or two again - I debate with myself!

  16. 1. I love to read, usually browse amazon for latest releases.
    2. Mystery, thriller, non-fiction books
    3. Unfortunately I don't go to the library anymore. I buy books or lend them from my mom or sister.
    4. I love print books. I guess I'm old-school that way.

    Lovely flowers :)
