Economy blocks..

I am not exactly bored with the hexie/Grandmother's flower garden quilt, but I did want to do something different.    I was running into this block every where I looked so I thought I would make a few.  They can be made any size you want, but I am making these 4 1/2 inches unfinished...which means when actually in a quilt, they will be 4 inches across.  I first thought I would use the bits and pieces of orange to make a square big enough for the center.

I am pulling fabric from the many actual scraps that I have accumulated over the years.  Many of them were other people's scraps..

I am for sure not crazy about my fabric combinations...but these are just an experiment.  And usually by the time you have a bunch of color combinations they all start to look better.

This afternoon, I decided to try NON-orange centers...

I think I like these better.....LOL

If I follow through with my plans, I am going to make a small quilt with these to hang up on the wall.  Maybe in the sewing room....maybe somewhere else.

Roger is still dizzy.  Our Nurse Practitoner  thinks he has wax in one ear and tried to flush it out.  I had done been trying that and not having any luck at all.  So she was afraid of hurting him..so she is having me take him to our ENT.  We are supposed to go Tuesday...but wouldn't you know that we are supposed to get between 4 and 7 inches of snow by Monday night.

In the meantime, she sent him for therapy.  To one that can do the adjustment for the crystals in your ears.  You can read about them HERE...much better than I can ever explain it to you.  I have to look it up.  He went for his evaluation Wed...I did not go back with him which was a big mistake cause he could not tell me if they did the adjustment or not.

Friday went back, but the therapist he had this time had not been trained to do the treatment.  However, she is a sharp little therapist...she has finally got him convinced to use a cane even in the house, and it has helped him so much.  I feel like she is going to really help him, and she did not mind that I came back.  I wanted to see what she had him do, till maybe I could follow through with some of it here.

Here's Copper...

He now weighs 57 lbs.

Not sure how you will feel about this video...the part I want you to listen to begins at about the 1 minute and 55 seconds mark

And below is a bit of sweetness...

  1. Had never heard of these crystals!!!!!!!! Oh mercy! Another thing which can 'go wrong' with us. But good to know, there is a way to fix them.

Best of luck to your husband.

And great that this young lady, could convince him, to use a cane, he needs. Wonderful...!

  2. I like the purple and blue one the best. I am glad someone convinced him to use his cane. Dramimine is supposed to help the crystal kind of dizziness.

  3. I prefer the non orange centres too I think.

My MIL has been dizzy too. She is have a brain scan to see if anything is wrong. I thought it might be an ear problem too, but what do I know? Hope your husband does better, especially with the cane in the house.

We underestimate animals. They continue to amaze me. Hummer and the dog are a reminder of the beauty of all creatures. Thank you for sharing.

  4. I love the blocks. I once made a quilt for my son using that block in blues and greens with some plaid blocks.

Roger's problems sound so similar to the trouble Tom was having a few months ago. He was having dizziness, loss of hearing in one ear and trouble walking. The doctor sent him to an Ent and he adjusted the crystals in his ear. I had never heard of that before but it did help him some but not completely. That was when he had to start using a cane too. The whole family had to convince him to use one because he was having so much trouble walking. He still has not gotten his hearing back in that ear and now I'm trying to convince him to get a hearing aid. These guys can be stubborn! I'm so glad Roger has a good therapist. That can help a lot. You two take care!

  5. Copper is a riot. And I'm glad Roger is getting some help...I think it's good that you go back with him to see what is going on. Andy and I do that for one another when the situation is new...we figure two brains are better than one to remember and discuss things.

  7. Every now and then I have to do the crystal therapy so I already knew about that and I'm glad that he went to the therapist in these using the cane and it sounds like you're finally getting some help that can really help. I hope the snow doesn't keep if I'm going to the ENT. Be really really careful if you do go. Copper is so absolutely beautiful

  8. Crystals can really mess you up. Hope he gets some relief. Glad they got him to use a cane.
It is wonderful when you find a medical person who is kind and really listens.

  10. Gotta love that adorable Copper! He's a incredible dog. Y'know?...I actually think the blues with your oranges would make a beautiful quilt all pieced together for contasting colors! Of course that's my personal opinion.

Never heard of this treatment but glad to hear of his therapy & use of a cane now

  11. I actually like your colors! That's probably because I love bright colors. You have your hands full with your Roger and I well know what you are going through! I love all your videos. Take care and enjoy your quilting!💖

  12. I like quilts made from scraps, just like Grandma would have made. I see you are still sewing every day! I admire you for that! Nasty weather for sure! Hope all goes well for the appointments.

  15. Hi, Just stopping by to say Happy Valentine's Day to you and Roger. Hope he can get some help with his dizziness. Sounds like the therapist is helping a lot.

My best friend's husband had a serious stroke a year ago --and still cannot talk much...He is so stubborn though and won't get the right kind of help needed. Judy is having such a hard time since Charlie has gotten mean when he gets mad... It's just a bad situation...

    Your quilting is always amazing....

We have had a miserable time here for several days of cold weather, freezing fog, freezing drizzle, etc... The temp now is 26 here --and we have a Winter Storm Warning out for tonight, Monday and Monday night... Supposed to have an Ice Storm plus some snow..... I love the snow--but not the ice...

Be careful up there.... Stay SAFE.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  16. Nothing wrong with using a cane or a walker - much better than a major injury from falling over. Take care, both of you :)

  17. Several members of my family ( myself included) have had bouts of BPPV which may be what you refer to. In any case this BPPV also is caused by crystals coming loose in the ear and causing dizziness. The first time middle son had an 'attack' of it he was so frightened he called an ambulance ( there was no way he could drive) but at the hospital they diagnosed the BPPV and send him home. They didn't try to 'fix' it at all. Anyway, I find it goes away within 2 or 3 days.
The 3 Little Pigs video is hilarious!!

  18. Sometimes it just takes the right person to connect with a patient to make things work. I hope Roger gets the help he needs, because in the end that will help you as well.

  19. I like the combination for the quilt. Once they are sewed together, the quilt will look great. Good for Roger, the nurse is able to help him. Hope everything will works out well for Roger and also for you. Have a great week.

  20. Good idea in using scraps and I like what you did. Good for you on going in with Roger. I have to do that with Bob because he is so hard of hearing he misses what the drs are saying. It helps him and me too.
Videos are fun---you always choose good ones. Be safe out there with a storm coming.

  21. Your sewing has inspired me once again to climb the stairs to my sewing nook and spend some time mending. It was snowing outside and I enjoyed watching the big flakes as I worked.

  22. So many people are experiencing vertigo...wonder why. Sure hope Rogers gets better. That is such a bad feeling. My sister has it bad right now and I just got over a week of feeling dizzy and sick. You make some amazing quilt squares. We are supposed to go for our secong covid vaccine tomorrow and now they are calling for freezing rain and icy conditions. That last picture of Copper sure made me smile.

  23. Your fabrics are so retro and fun! I think there is a ear wash thing you can buy that helps with ear wax, ask the ENT!
