Just a swingin'

Is there anyone that doesn't like to swing? I honestly wouldn't mind having a swing in my house. A friend of a friend of my husband did have a swing in his house. I never saw it, but Roger came home telling me I would have loved his house.
That is the thing I can't wait for in the spring--it being warm enough to sit in the swing on either the front or back porch and sit and visit with friends or family. Or sit out there when I talk on the phone.

My love affair with swings started when I was a kid. We had a fair sized walnut tree, and always had at least one swing in it. And most of the time there were 3 0r 4. No tipping over the swingset for us. But every now and then the rope would break....or, I think part of them, if not all of them had a chain that went around the limb, and the rope then attached to the chain. I can remember very clearly one time the piece of chain coming loose and coming down hitting me on the head. It was not the typical porch swing chain...it was an actual working chain, not super heavy duty. I think about like the chain used to connect horse to plow.

It was before I was in school...I know there were no leaves on the tree, and no one else was around. I think I cried, but don't remember for sure. Oh, and at least part of the time, if not all, our 'rope' was actually baler twine. And we didn't call it baler twine...we called it grass string.
I think we plaited it sometimes...not sure if we did all the time. But we did at least double it or triple it..

That walnut tree seemed huge to me then....

  1. Who wouldn't love to have a swing like that, under a tree, in a warm breeze. Sigh. Your previous post made me want it to snow; now I want to just skip it and go right to spring!

  2. I have a swing in my gazebo. I don't think you can live in the country and not have at least one.
We were on a drive yesterday up a rural road where we had to turn around and come back.
We passed a small barn/garage and there in the middle section was a women on a swing. I thought it was the coolest thing.
    Great shots!

  4. I love your remembrances. We had a tire swing on a heavy rope, tied to the limb of a huge oak tree down by the barn. I loved to swing, and my kids and grandkids love to swing, too. Must be inherited.:)

  5. How funny, Rose. Just last evening a few friends and I were talking about swings. We were talking nostalgically, just like you. ;-)

  6. I always enjoy your memories and they remind me so much of my own youth :-) My dad liked to build and he built us a large wooden swingset with a swing and a trapeze. It was the trapeze that I loved to swing on the best...mostly upside down!

  7. I don't think a swing in a swing set could be near as much fun as the one in that tree.

  9. I love this post. Swings are most relaxing. I have seen modern sling type swings that mount inside the house. It is like a caccoon that wraps around you. I would like one of those.

  10. I used to love to swing on the tire swings when I was little. It was soothing and I could do this for hours... but I always did want a chair swing but living in apartments never gave us the opportunity to have one... perhaps one day we will.
    A very nice post!

  12. As we looked at the house we are fixing to close on I pointed out the large tree. Large enough for an old tire swing. They just make you think peaceful thoughts looking at them. I also want my grandchildren to experience it.
