Not your typical phone booth

This 'Amish phone booth' was actually leaning....I wondered had it been hit by a car or just what had happened.  I have wondered how they work...is it a typical pay phone, or does the Amish family pay for it, or, does the community pay for it?

EDited to add:  Read Tom's Comment about how the phone bill is paid.

And I did know they are not really phone booths, but was trying to be funny.  They are called phone shacks.

  1. I have never heard of an Amish Phone Booth before. A very pretty scene with it placed under the tree. Lovely image:)

  2. Around here they are called phone shacks. Those that I have seen have a normal phone and a note book where each caller records hiscalls. When to bill comes each caller pays for their calls. Nice honor system.

  3. We don't really have these around here, though we do have a burgeoning Amish and Mennonite community. Typically many Amish families have a phone located in their barn, or somewhere else on their property, but not in the house.

  4. it is very pretty and a great idea, but i don't get if it is ok to talk on the phone why they can't have one in the house. if it ok for the barn or booth why not the house.

  5. I think it's a super idea for the Amish. It allows them to pretty much maintain their lifestyle but have a few toes in the modern world,

  7. Hmm....maybe the kids can use this as a bus stop shack? I'd guess that all Amish homes do not yet have telephones, so probably need a phone booth?

  8. I think that is a cool way to maintain contact in the present, but keep their homes as modern free as possible.

  9. I just finished reading a book that talked about these Amish Phone Shacks so it was really neat to see your picture of one of them.

  10. Around here there is also a "phone shack" for their use. Not sure how the bill is paid tho.
