I finally finished these little potholders...I should name call them Little Bits of Me...I have had the front of them made for a while.  And Sarah has taken one home...

They are bits and pieces of quilting material just sewn together any way.

I actually buys scraps from a quilt shop to mix in with my own.  Crazy.  I know.  But I cannot resist.

They are made to use, not to be pretty.  I did not think to take a picture of the back.  The backings on these are heavy denim....in between the front and the back is a lay of insul-bright, a layer of batting, and also just another square of fabric...I did not put hanging loops on them because I didn't feel like taking the time.  Neither my girls nor I hang them, so why bother.

*************
Roger has been having off times...will be fine for a bit and then feel terrible.  I took away one med that he had recently been put on and it has helped.  Yesterday is the first day he has felt half-way normal all day in ages.  And keep in mind his normal is never really normal...not since his stroke.    It is just a new normal.

************

Have you ever taken a big ham steak and grilled it?  I have did them like that forever, but don't think I have ever heard of anyone else doing it.  I did one tonight for the first time in a while. It was delicious.  I had got it to have with Lorelei, but ended up just going ahead and fixing it.  So will have to get more for when she is here.

I will leave you with a little Ken Davis:

If you only knew....maybe I should tell it here.  Admit to it.  Give you a glimpse of my real life.

Since Roger's stroke, other than when I had my accident and could not drive, he wants to go to breakfast every single morn.  McDonald's and Hardee's are the usual fare, along with going to a local diner once or twice a week.

Oh, and when Lorelei spends the night, she likes my cooking, so we stay home.  And he will eat and not complain.

But we have had some major arguments over where to eat....he could not make a decision.  He would say wherever you want to go.  And I would say, you are the one wanting to go...you choose!  It is funny now, but sure was not then.  He would say he just wanted me to be happy...I would say "don't say that or we will stay home cause that is what will make me happy."

I am not doing this justice...it was not every day....the arguments I mean.  But the getting up to go was every day...he would not eat at home.  And we still go every single day of the week unless Lorelei is here.  I think being out, he forgets he is not normal.  It gives him something else to think about.  And he wants to sit there. So we sit and do some therapy.   We sit there for at least an hour, probably more often than not an hour and a half.

Now he will say which one he wants to go to if he has a preference, other times he really doesn't care.

Anyway, that is just a little glimpse...not a full disclosure.

  1. The potholders are beautiful! Each one is a little work of art. They even look so good in a group, and that would make the prettiest wall hanging! You have such a talent for matching fabrics. I am glad that Roger wants to get out, and not stay in the house and be depressed, so that is one good thing.

  2. The potholders look great. Life throws us some curve balls, like with Roger getting his stroke. It's not easy when these things happen, but we must carry on.

  3. The ups & downs of life in general can be a daily challenge. When our grandson had open heart surgery at 5 months old, I was comforted with 'god gives us only what we can handle'. He survived...we all are stronger because of it.

    Beautiful handiwork Rose.

  5. I love the potholders. How fun to mix and match scraps! I know as Roger's caregiver, you get weary of leaving home every single day and never being able to rest a little longer or doing something you would like to do. His stroke is devastating to both of you. Prayers and love.

  6. The potholders look great. I buy ham steaks at Sam’s Club. They come four to a package. Mostly I fry them on top of the stove. I know we grilled one one time. The ham steaks are good any way they are prepared :).

  7. The video is like the discussions my husband and I have too. We eat out for breakfast every few months if we have early appointments etc. I prefer to eat at home but every so often eating out is fine.

I can understand your hesitation to eat out every morning. Then again, life is about transitions and the stroke required transitions. Breakfast out sounds like one of them.

  8. after reading about the breakfast outings, that would make me crazy. I just could not do it. I don't think bob will ever do that because he hates, to eat out.. hope he remains like that. but he still does plenty to make me crazy... I will not talk about it here though. I do somewhat understand what you are going through, because bob is a different man after stroke also. changed his personality for the worse. of course mine is chaning from aging, so who am I to talk. those pot holders would be perfect to sit hot pots on the counter. I sometimes use mine that way.... if we had a grill I would to the ham steak, sounds wonderful.

  9. Oh, you hit a nerve! We have a similar argument all the time except that my husband is EXTREMELY picky about his food. He wants it cooked perfectly and I don't know how to do that. We have had so many fights that we hardly ever sit down to eat together. I cook, put the food in the refrigerator and then each person heats it up later. He can eat it or not and I don't cook again until the refrigerator is empty. I think he is OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) so I have learned to adapt.

My father also wanted to eat out and go somewhere every day after he had a stroke. Mom would take him to different stores so he could shop while riding in one of those electric carts. Home Depot was his favorite. There he would sit and examine nuts, bolts, and screws forever. Mom would sit on a bench and wait. The downside was that he wasted so much money on useless crap.

  10. The pot holders are beautiful. A lovely addition to any kitchen. Love them.
At least Roger wants to go out. I think it would be worse if he just wanted to sit home all the time!
A few times a week on my walk I add the two of you to my morning prayers.

  11. Those holders are very, very pretty Rose. Sorry to hear that Roger has his off days. I was wondering if the heat gets to him also. It does me and I don't have to deal with what Roger has had to deal with. You are both in my thought and prayers as I know you've been through a lot too. We used to eat out a lot but not so much these days. We are on a mini road trip right now and we were in McDonalds for breakfast this morning. I am partial to their oatmeal. I find the added fruit tasty.

  13. I'm late commenting because I've had some issues with my blog but also because it's so hot and whenever I have energy to do anything I go putter with my flowers.
I like pretty potholders and your creations definitely are pretty! Before I even read your post I did a post about some of mine. What a coincidence.

Sorry about your struggles with the issues your husband is having. I'm sure it is anything but easy.

  14. Even with scraps, your potholders are very pretty. Its a challenge for anyone who has gone through a stroke, and the same for the care giver too. Some people like staying in the house when they are not well but there are others who prefer being out, depending on the person and his or her preferences. Have a lovely weekend.

  15. Hello,

I hope and pray Roger feels better, back to normal. I guess if it helps him, eating out is good. We usually try to save money and eat at home. We may go out once a week with our son. Your potholders are cute! Enjoy your day, happy weekend!

  16. i think we go through life and the "new normal" does become the normal way of life. i hope it will go smoothly for you both. i guess we all get thrown curve balls (some more than others, but??!) and work with it the best we can. i know my parents eat out a bunch, my Dad dislikes when my Mom works hard in the kitchen cleaning. i just think it is funny, 'cause it use to be a joke we picked on his parents (my grandparents) about them eating out so much, it has come truly full circle. LOL! enjoy your weekend. take care. ( ;

  17. I do like the potholders. You are so clever and talented.
I scrolled through the posts I missed. Bubbie is such a handsome cat. Really nice. And those Hostas are looking good. I did not have a-one come up this year. Too dry I think.
