Today...

Today, Roger killed a turkey...the biggest he has ever killed! It weighed 25 lb....We didn't measure the beard. I know he had one turkey with a longer beard before.
I just have to show you some of the feathers...you have to enlarge these to see what I am talking about. They have not been manipulated, other than I re-sized the pictures for this blog.
Aren't they gorgeous!
Look at that green on the above photo...that is really what it looked like.
And these! Can you believe the color?
And as an added treat, look at this red headed woodpecker! We took a short drive late this afternoon, and I spotted him on this post as we were going around this curve.
It is the first one I have seen in years and years. I only managed to get one shot before he took off.

  3. EG, Roger will probably use some of the feathers for tying flies.

Fishing Guy, I could never say that these woodpeckers were plentiful, but I did see them when every now and then when I grew up in Tennessee. I live in a little town now, and think that is why I don't see them.

  4. Even though I hate seeing birds killed, that turkey is a whopper! The feathers are gorgeous! So unusal looking. Glad I got to see them up-close. Congrats on the Red-headed woodpecker....that is the type I almost never see. I've never seen one at a feeder like all the others.

  6. Wow, that's some turkey! We had 3 go thru the yard a few days ago. I asked my husband what those long things were hanging down. I guess I'd never seen the beards before. lol

  7. That is a huge turkey! Thanks for giving us an ever closer series of shot so we could see in the detail the textures and vivid colors in the bird's feathers. Fine shooting. Mr. Woodpecker looks very good too!

  8. That is one big turkey, Rose... Good eating I guess???? What will become of the feathers??? Hope you can keep them and make something with them. They are gorgeous.

  9. I love the colors of those feathers, especially the burnt orange color! That's one of my favorite colors!

I remember one time, a friend had made some kind of deal w/ feathers after shooting a turkey. We brought it home (some kind of wall display w/ the feathers) & hung it up on the wall cuz it was really pretty. Well, a few days later we were sitting on the couch & I noticed something moving on the back of the couch out of the corner of my eye. I hope I don't gross you out too bad when I say this, but maggots had fallen from the feathers because the guy that shot the turkey didn't clean off the meat well enough before he made the feather display! Needless to say, I lost my lunch & wasn't able to eat for 2 days.

Moral of the story, CLEAN THE MEAT & FEATHERS! LoL!

  10. Rose, if you start cooking the drumsticks today they might be tender by this time next year. :)

  11. I agree, Turkey feathers are so much more colorful than most people think. Nice capture of the woodpecker on the old fence.
