Mopheads!

I saw these little bitty flowers out at the old strip pits the other day...they immediately reminded me of mop heads. At the most, each little flower was a half inch in diameter.
I haven't tried to identify them yet....maybe when I get time.

I have been playing some with my Electric Quilt computer program...trying to think and design what I want to make next. I have got my machine all set and ready to sew if I could make up my mind. Sometimes it was easier when I didn't have so much to choose from.

Along the way, I have built up a significant stash of quilting material because I knew once Roger retired I wouldn't be going and spending so much on fabric. I still buy some along, or if I really need something I go get it. Usually I have a good supply of anything I need...I do buy good yellow fabric whenever I find one I really like because I continually run out of it. Almost any quilt I make has some yellow yellow in it.

It is so wet and rainy here in our area...I don't think it totally quit raining the entire day yesterday. And it is the same again this morn, though I think the rain is supposed to move on through by the end of the day, with days of typical fall weather following.

I was thinking as was waking up this morn about how unusual the weather is. I don't ever remember having as much cool weather by this time of the year when I worked at the orchard. There would be days I would start out with a jacket or one of Roger's heavy flannel shirts, but very seldom did they stay on past 10:00 a.m. This fall, there have been several days where I think I would have had to wear a jacket most or all of the day.

  1. They do look like mopheads - or Fraggles (?). It is very cool here as well and tonight will be a frost in the south and maybe freezing in the north. Sigh.

  2. I really like these flowers, whatever they are...I can't recall seeing anything like them around here.

And you're photos are excellent, especially the one of the white flowers - I find it so difficult to pick up detail shooting white flowers.

I wish you could send some of your cool weather; we're in the middle of a record-breaking heat wave. Our normal highs this time of year are in the low to mid-80s. But we've had day after day of mid-90s along with high humidity. Ugh!

  4. Hi Rose, No matter what kind of quilt you make, I'm sure it will be GORGEOUS....

Love those little mophead flowers. They do look like little tiny mops.

We've got rain also --and have been in Hendersonville all day checking on G's parents. It's no fun to drive in the pouring rain.

You'll love my blog today--since you used to work in an apple orchard.
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  9. The little "mop heads" are very attractive. I don't think I've ever seen these before. Nice shots of them. We heading into a cold snap tonight with predicted near 20° which should finish off most of the summer flowers and veggies.

  10. I like your mop head flowers :-) They do look rather like little mops. I've alawys wondered about using Electric Quilt. I'd probably spend my time playing with it instead of making something. I'm pretty well supplied with all colors of fabric at the moment which is good, since I can't afford to buy any. I'll just keep working my way though my stash :-) I've got 2 of my Christmas stockings done and the others are half done. I'm ready to work on something more quilt-like.

  11. Mop Heads is a perfect name for these... I am not good on names of flowers at all... and tend to do much the same as you have here and give them names.
As for the weather... we are seeing slight changes.... we are having some very warm, sunny days at the moment.. yet Autumn is in full swing. The nights can see the tempreture drop quite a lot, but still it is not that bad concidering the time of year.
Happy quilting... I am in the middle of stuffing all the knitted toys I have made for the grand children... then I have to put the faces on the the knitted dolls and such. I sent off for a bag of stuffing from ebay.... and got a proper bargain price wise. Then this large box arrived, it was the size of a desent TV... I opened it up and opened the plastic bag inside...... big mistake... the stuffing started to grow.. it soon pushed its way out the bag and box... and as me and Jane sat there laughing in spread out over the front room carpet.. ha!.. It is now squashed into 3 boxes and two big bags.....

  12. I agree, much cooler all year 'round. The furnace came on this morning, and I didn't even set the temp, it just got cold enough for it to kick in on it's own! Chil-lee!

  14. I think that your purple flowers are the same type that I photographed on Sept 28th http://debbienorman.wordpress.com/2009/09/28/purple-wild-flowers/
But yours are much prettier. Mine were bitten back by the cold weather already. But I did see some too far away for me to photograph, that looked a little better, more like yours. Great photos! If you find out what they are you'll have to tell me. :)

  16. I love the little mop heads, they sort of look like the flowers on Blazing Star. I'm not sure, but I like mop heads better anyways.
