First adventure with GPS driving....

This is a church we passed on our drive today...a drive-by shot through the windshield...not too bad. But the one I got when we were closer had all these reflections and lens flare...so this one is the one I am stuck showing you. I think it still gives an idea of how big and beautiful it is. I did not notice the crosses in the roof till I looked I looked at these photos.

Our GPS came the other day...today was the first opportunity we have had to try it out. I wanted to head north, but checked the weather up that way. There was a big storm on the way to the area I wanted to go....so quickly chose a destination to the south. We didn't follow The Voice's directions exactly....we wanted to go a more indirect route.

We had fun imagining what The Voice was thinking...we could almost hear the disgust in The Voice each time we Did Not make the turn she suggested...she would say 'recalculating'...Roger asked if I thought she realized it was a man driving and if she realized he was hardheaded.

I told him I was going to do a post and title it: A GPS, we are still taking the scenic route! We have sure taken some in our travels, but I don't think any have been quite as bad as a friend. I don't remember the car they were driving at the time, but one time they ended up on a road and the only other vehicles were jeeps and 4-wheel drive trucks!

Then there is the song One Headlight by the Wallflowers...we neither one can hear it without thinking of the time that we only had this old, old station wagon. I think we only had our older daughter, but I am not sure. We were on our way home from Terre Haute, and we would hit a pothole and the lights would go out...hit another one and they were back on!

I was scared of course, though there must have been moonlight because I can still remember we could see the road...but I got tickled. And started laughing...and Roger was shall we say frustrated...and he asked me if I could hush which made it that much more funny. I did tell him it was either laugh or cry....and that was the truth. We made it home safely, and without being seen by the police. So any time you hear the song, or even hear the term headlight, think of us.

Another time, for a second vehicle Roger got this old, old truck. Guess what...coming up Highway 63 one night, the lights started the same thing...drive a few hundred feet and they would turn off. Wait a little bit and they would blink back on....that time he cut over to the river road and drove home. Much darker that night...no street lights or not many houses to light the way.

And on the subject of cars, I think our Rav4 might be the only car we have had that didn't have a flat tire within about a month of getting it...even when they were brand new cars. And almost all have had a rock fly up and chip the front windshield.

  1. I know, the voice is too funny, makes you wonder what she really wants to say!

Sounds like you have had some adventures in the past, hopefully this GPS will steer you in the right direction!

  2. Have fun with your GPS! We always laugh when the voice says "recalculating". It's nice that you can take wrong turns and not be lost!

  3. LOL! I'm still laughing about your conversations wtih the GPS lady. We have a lot of those. We are always doing the opposite of what she tells us to do to check out something we spotted along the way..."Please, turn around at your first opportunity....turn around now...." I feel like sometimes she is begging us to listen to her for a change and would like to smack us for disobeying! We must frustrate her greatly :-) Mike says you can get one with a Darth Vader voice...I'm not sure I'd want him giving me directions! Ha! However, our TomTom lady has saved our hide a few times when we were sure where we were or how to get there....but she has also tried to put us on roads that don't exist. Even from a distance, the church shot is very nice! I love seeing churches and how they stick up and "guide" you into a town.

  4. You're right that she sounds disgusted! I will point that out next time. She's always worth a good laugh. Ours has an English accent so she always sounds more hoity-toity than friendly. No offense to the British, of course!

  5. Sometimes I just want to tell her to shut up!
I do think it was very clever of makers to use a woman's voice though. :)

  6. Hey Rose, Set your GPS for the shortest route --rather than the fastest. You can also program it to stay off of toll roads, etc... AND--you can also ask it for a DETOUR if you want to go another way...

We love ours--and she takes us on all of the back roads--when we ask her to... The fastest time is usually on interstates or 4-lanes.

I hope you enjoy yours.. She does get 'bossy' at times, doesn't she???? ha

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  7. A beautiful church, Rose. Nice shot from the car, too.

We have used a GPS on occasion but the last time it took us in the wrong direction on the wrong street. We put it away.

  8. Rose: The GPS is so much fun and I love to make it recalculate the route.

  9. Hi Rose, Thanks for your comment! We are excitedly planning for Joe being released on Saturday. We will stay round for him to have his check-up with his surgeon on Wed. and we may stay until the weekend as they are expecting his compression garments to arrive on Friday. Then if all is still gining well we will be back in 3 weeks for a check-up.

  10. I think you may have some interesting adventures ahead with your GPS, Rose. :)

The stories about the vehicles with headlights going on and off were funny but scary. Windshields and rocks? Yep, been there many times!

  11. The voice in your GPS must be the same as the voice in ours. She really does get 'peeved' when she has to recalculate. We have our GPS 'trained' pretty well and we almost always travel a scenic route.

  13. I guess you aren't geocaching. lol.

I love your little stories. I've never had a car without a chip in the windshield except the car I have now and it's only a few months old.
