Old jail museum in Albion, Indiana, Noble County.

I seen this roof and had to know what it was. The man we were talking to told us it was the Old Jail Museum....of course it was not open. It was well worth walking an extra block or two to take a few photos. I could not believe it had been a jail.

I was going to title this post something along the lines of 'A man's home is his castle' but decided against it. And I thought about spreading the posts out over a couple of days but will just post the best ones here. The above part shows the jail ....

It was constructed in 1876, to house the convicts and to house the Sheriff's office and to also serve as his home. I cannot imagine living right alongside the inmates.
Wonder what it felt like to call this home?

  1. As an added note, it was converted from a jail to the Old Jail Museum in 1968, and is owned and operated by the Noble County Historical Society.

  2. It is an impressive-looking building. You'll have to go back one day and take a tour of the inside.

  5. Another great 'find' to go with your courthouse. I can't imagine this being the Sheriff's home. What a fine looking building.

  6. The old jail in my hometown -- Crown Point, Indiana -- is very similar to this. That jail has also been turned into a museum.

  7. What a gorgeous building... I cannot believe they built something so elegant to house inmates..... Goodness---if I were sheriff, I wouldn't want to live there either.

And --now, it is a museum????? Too bad it wasn't open--so that you could visit it... What a beautiful building...

    Hugs,

  8. Rose: That building is just perfect but not for a jail.

  10. What a neat looking house! I love the roof and can see why it drew your attention. This seems much to nice to house a jail! I can see it as a museum, however :-) I'm glad they saved it.

  11. I clicked on this Name because the name is also the town I live in..ONLY Michigan not Indiana. I had no idea Indiana had a town named ALBION. Ours is pretty small but boy we have NOTHING that looks like this "castle" and for it to be a jail..hmmm
Anyway you are quite right..never would even think about living in the same building.. how unsafe is that!! Nice photos.. :-)

  12. I've been spending some time inside the Old Jail Museum (yep, I live in Albion, Caroldee!), and it really is beautiful in there -- and gloomy on the jail side. I've been going through photos from their collection, working on a history book for Arcadia Publishing. If you like the old jail, check out the Noble County Courthouse just a block away -- amazing place.
