More snow on the way

This is one of the goldfinches that visit our feeders.  We don't have many of them.  I have more in the summer when I have actual sunflowers growing.

Has anyone ever grown thistles on purpose?  Sometimes I am tempted to.  I love their flowers--they are so pretty.  I think people would probably think I need my head examined if I did.

Believe it or not, more snow is headed our way.  Not much according to the weatherman.  2 or 3 inches.  We were in the 20's today.  It felt like a heat wave.  Even my kitties do not like this weather.  Bubbie goes out one door, and usually goes around to the other door and wants in.  And once today he wanted out, Roger opened the door and he turned around and ran away from the door.

  2. What a sweet little Goldfinch. I don't see them at all in the winter. Summer time visitors for sure.
We have plenty of thistles growing in the fields around here. Don't grow any unless you want to behead them before they go to seed but then you are defeating your purpose. Perhaps grow Artichokes. The look like giant Thistles when they go to seed. MB

  3. We have Goldfiches all winter long but they are faded from their bright summer yellow. I grow thistles and other related varieties. It's fun to watch the birds balance while they collect the seed because their weight bends the branches.
Woke up this morning to 2 inches of new snow and the temp went up to a balmy 17 oF. Break out the shorts!!

  6. Our Gold Finches have departed for the winter. I get an occasional bird taking a bath in the heated bird bath, and a few sips of water, but that's it for now.

  8. Good Morning, We had more snow this morning --but so far, not much. It's cold --but tomorrow will be warm (first day over freezing in a long time). However, next week, the horribly cold temps come back. I love winter --but certainly not these frigid temperatures…

We still have tons of Goldfinches. They love most anything I put out except suet. I do have a Thistle feeder --but certainly don't grow those things!!! ha

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  9. There has got to be some kind of decorative thistle you can grow. My friends just buy a thistle sock that they hang in their garden. Those little birds are in heaven with that sock.

  10. Rose...The bird are going crazy here for food. Your feeder is so pretty. That little cutie pie looks to be in the right place. I went over that block measuring all the sections and seams, and I did it correctly...I am sure. There was an error in a pattern earlier, but I caught it as I was cutting. This time I think it was the same thing. The crummy part is I have no more of those fabrics, but I am tempted to do it again just to see if it was the pattern. Thanks for boosting the old morale. genie

  12. I love goldfinches, they are so tiny and cute!

No, I have never grown thistle on purpose but I sure wouldn't mind it if it stayed where I planted it! ;-) I do love the purple flowers.

Hey, I saw a great quote on another blog today -
"To shorten winter, borrow some money due in spring."

Hope you're having a nice weekend- stay warm. That wind was wild today!

  13. I don't grow thistles on purpose. They grow in the fields nearby so I often find seedlings in my gardens. I think they are attractive too but like them better in the wild where I won't walk on them in my bare feet. ;)
