Can we talk?

Does your cabinets get to looking like this?

Or does it look like this?
I spent the entire afternoon working on this pantry.  I did take everything off the shelves.  And while it may not look greatly improved, it is.

Now I have questions and would like any and all responses.  I may not reply back to you, but I will appreciate any and all feedback.  (Roger has a doctor's appointment tomorrow so I know we will be gone at least 4-5 hours.)

Anyway, what I want to know, does your cabinets stay neat and tidy?  Most times, within two weeks you wouldn't know this had been touched.

And how do you keep from hiding stuff behind other things?  On the canned goods side, things are together now, but they won't stay that way for long.  I would be so much simpler if things did not get mixed together.

Also, how do you keep your brown sugar from getting hard after it is opened.  I always have a problem with that.

And then there is the plastic bags.  I use them for small trash can liners, but have got to come up with a better solution to storing them.  I have been shoving them in a bag, and that is in a bottom cabinet.  And they just take up space.

Well, that is all I can think of right now...I think there was more I wanted feedback on but for the life of me I cannot remember what right now.

  1. I always have good intentions but no, my cabinets never stay tidy. I can usually pull something out if I need it but not always on the first look :) Now tidy things up and I have a real hard time finding them, which applies to any part of the house and not just the pantry. When I worked in a kitchen yonks ago we used to put several plastic bags in the bottom of each trash bin, underneath the one that was in use. Then we would take the old one out and pick one off the top and use that and so on and so on until they were all gone and had to be replaced.

  2. I buy brown sugar in plastic bags. I close the bag up tight and put it in a Tupperware container so it is fairly air tight. Never gets hard.

Being single my shelves either look like yours because I don't feel like cooking or they only contain brown sugar. ;o) Sad either way.

  3. OMGosh, I stopped here from Barb's blog and can't help but comment on this post. I am lucky to have a pantry that is actually a closet in my laundry room which is off the kitchen between the kitchen and garage. I keep my bags in a bag holder hanging on the wall behind the door between the kitchen and laundry room.

My pantry is always...AlWAYS in order because I am OCD about it. My pantry is much like your newly organized picture. Things don't get misplaced behind any cans because all soups, veggies, beans are always stored in their own spot.

If I don't have time to put groceries away properly, then I don't put them away until I do...always within an hour or so. If you don't make time to do it properly, every can will just be in the cabinet and not in it's assigned area.

So let me say that organization is my nature...I am retired, but my career depended on my organization and always performing each task by the same routine. I was a quality certification manager for aircraft/government contracts.

Just try to put things away where you want them to be and don't beat yourself up about a disorganized pantry. It's a little thing.

Now, I'm off to check out your quilting. I suspect they are marvelous. It's a left brain/right brain thing. Wish my left was more active, lol.
    Merry Christmas

  4. Good for you for cleaning your cupboard, Rose! In my kitchen, everything that has an assigned place stays fairly neat...but anything that doesn't looks like your before photo. ;)

  5. I have no pantry and never have more than 10 or 12 cans on the two shelves i use. i buy only what i am going to cook and have maybe 2 weeks of meals most of the time. but if i did it would not stay organized. i organize the computer room, desk and drawers and all surfaces and 2 weeks later i need to do it again

  6. Organizing and keeping things neat is always a challenge. My first impression is that you have too much on the shelves. I don't stock up that much ahead. We are so unpredictable on eating in or eating out, and I tend to buy only staples then fill them back in when I go shopping to replace them. Brown sugar stays soft if you put it inside a zip lock bag....for me.

  7. Oh Rose, what a topic. I am fortunate to have a small pantry which I try and I did say try to keep organized but then again I am not organized but better than Bob. It is not a mess though. He just never puts anything away. My late husband was very meticulous--I must have learned something from him. We did make the second bedroom closet into another pantry/storage area. YAY!!! I like to put like things together so I can just go to one place and find what I need.
I always had the brown sugar problem so now I have an airtight container and have added a earthen ware circle (supposed to keep sugar from getting hard) and it actually works here. Never did before. HA!
    'Nuff said.

  8. My shelves do not stay organized for long. When I first come home from the grocery store, I have more canned goods than I have room for and it gets messy. Sometimes I have to search and search for a can that I KNOW I have somewhere! lol
I've seen little clay discs at Bed Bath & Beyond that you place in the bag with brown sugar that is supposed to keep it moist.
My freezer (just the top of my frig) is always packed to the brim too. Sometimes, I have to take stuff out of their original packaging to make room for what I've bought. The boxes are much bigger than the food itself!
