From Georgia

A few years ago we traveled through Georgia...we were not there to visit, but we did detour off the interstate and went down some local roads, both going and coming.  I had always wanted to see cotton growing since I love cotton cloth....for everything.  The above is one of a few blossoms we saw.

This is not the greatest of pics...but still, imagine the backbreaking work it would be to pick this field by hand.

So there you have it...the beginning of all my quilts.....

***********
I have seriously wanted a few cotton seeds to see if I could grow it here.  I know I would have to start them in the house under a grow light because our season is not long enough.  Still I would like to try it someday.
**********
Lorelei went home yesterday...nothing much happened while she was here...we did paint a shirt but I did not take a good photo of it.   She was wishing we could go to the creek, but it is flooded too much to go.  I am hoping that we get to go at some point this year because she enjoys it so much....

These were taken 2 or 3 years ago....She will probably be like her mom, or grandma, and still enjoy doing this when she is an old lady!

  1. I love your cotton field shot. This is something I have never seen in a blog. I remember how much Lorelei loved the creek, and the pictures. I sure hope you get to take her lots this summer.

  2. Wouldn't that be something if you could grow a cotton plant. It would be worth the trouble of growing it indoors just to see how it would grow.

  3. at age 74 I still love wading in creeks, or beaches or anything wadeable. glad the visit was uneventful and I know you both enjoyed time spent with each other. I love the cotton pics. I prefer my clothes to be mostly cotton.

It always amazes me to see cotton and imagine those puffs turning into the fabric I drool over at the quilt store. :-) Love the flower and the Lorelei photos, and that little tiny guy is quite handsome. :-)

  9. I have some cotton seeds I can send you. A couple of years ago I passed by a snow white field of cotton blooming and had to slip (trespass) into the field to forage (steal) a few boils. I am not sure if they are viable but it seems I can't ever get around to sprouting them. When I was researching about growing cotton, I discovered it naturally grew in a variety of colors. Hybridizers have created additional beautiful colors. The colored cotton is more resistant to bugs and requires no pesticides. Fabric companies prefer the white because they can then dye it any color. Growing white is harder on the environment.
Email me privately if you want the seeds.

  12. I have never seen cotton growing in real life just pictures and I had never seen the flower. I never even thought about a flower--just the white bolls. Interesting comment from a friend commenter of yours about the colored cotton. Amazing. I hope you get some viable seeds.
    I do miss Lorelei

  14. What a great time you had with Lorelei and she is so cute. You are all making such special memories. Great find of the tiny turtle and the cotton plant is so pretty. I saw one for the first time in one of our local gardens. It was a real treat.
