A little show and tell...

This shows the block before I totally finished the applique...  The black basting line is basting the leaf shape to the freezer paper base.  The white stitching stitches the shape to the background fabric.

Showing the stitching...the thread is more orange than it looks in the photo, but not as orange as I wish it were.

Here you see the stitches on the back of the block...

Above you see I have cut the background away from the behind the leaf and am removing the freezer paper.   One thing about this freezer paper, I don't think it is as good as what I used to get.  It does not feel as heavy and makes crinkling sounds.

And here is what it looks like after the basting is all removed and the freezer paper removed.

I have only finished the applique part of a few of them.  All the others I have finished still has the freezer paper and basting in them.  At the rate I am going, it is going to be a long time before I finish them all...have several things going and need to start another one...and yet I do so little.

************
I raked a bunch of leaves yesterday...well, 8 big garbage bags stuffed full as I could stuff them.  But that is nothing to what I used to rake at one go.  I had raked 4 a few days ago.  I still have quite a few to go, and keep waiting for the rest of the leaves to fall from a neighbor's tulip poplar and another neighbor's maple tree.  Bubbie was my constant companion through it all.
*************

I think I am warming up leftover meatloaf for supper...we need to eat on it.  Seems like at times, I love meatloaf and will have made one that is on the small side.  Then I make one a bit bigger, and we don't seem to enjoy it as much.  Anyway, I need to get in there and at least set it out.  I will actually probably put it in the oven later and let it warm up that way.  Most of the time we just warm up what we eat in the microwave.

I should have been outside working in leaves...but I have sat here instead.  And I did sew a few stitches.

I don't know if it was real bad allergies or what, but was sick a couple days this past week...but it passed quickly.  My throat was sore and I blew and blew and blew my nose the first morn.  Normally, Roger never volunteers to stay home for breakfast, but he looked at me and said, 'We don't have to go anywhere this morn....don't even worry about it.'  I don't know if it was how I sounded or how I looked or both.  LOL  I always sound and feel worse early in the morn.

I hope you all have a good week...I feel like I am forgetting something I wanted to ask but cannot think what it is for the life of me.

  1. this is really and involved and detailed project. I like how your stitches are so perfect and all the same size. the color is beautiful to... ick! on raking and I do the same with making small or large meat loaf. just like you said. I do try to make 3 meals at one time or 4 if I can... my son text me this morning and said he has been sick with a nasty cold and his boss made him take 4 days off. someone at the Y said a cold thing is going around here. sounds like that might be what you had. hope you are better each day

  2. You do a wonderful job of sewing on that applique! I rarely do hand sewing due to arthritis and carpal tunnel, but it looks so much better by hand! Are these blocks going to make up a quilt? Whatever they go into it will be beautiful.

I spent yesterday mowing and raking leaves. I got three big bags just out of the driveway and then woke up today to more leaves! I hope you are not getting sick. Today I feel like I have leaves or at least leaf dust in my lungs. Feel better soon!

  3. The sewing is lovely.
I did leaves today, and put them on the garden area. My tulip poplar is done, but the maple has a bit to go yet. Momma and Fluffy thought it was great fun getting the leaf piles and trying to get the rake!
It sure was lovely out most of today. I even turned off the heat and opened the doors and windows - prob. last time this year!
    Have a good week.

  4. I love the appliqued leaves. They're a lot of work but well worth the effort.
Speaking of effort.... raking up those leaves must have been quite a job. I don't suppose Bubbi was much help.

  5. Gosh, I hope you are not getting sick! At times I will have a sore throat, and feel kinda bad. But it will turn out to be nothing. I LOVE this orange fabric!

  6. I used to just wait for a good windy day to my neighbor's leaved (I didn't have any trees at my old house) would just blow on down the street. ;o) I don't think I can get away with that at the new house. I've helped my mom a couple of time with her leaves and have had allergy attacks both time. I think it is the pine needles.

LOVE the orange peel blocks! You have more patience than I do. I'd be raw edge appliqueing those babies down with a thread that probably wouldn't match (hehehe). Can't wait to see the finished quilt.

I also think you do a lot more than you give yourself credit for...4 bags or 8, pat yourself on the back for getting out there and doing it.

  7. Glad to hear that whatever was bothering you, didn't last too long.

  9. You paint such a sweet image of you and the cat out raking leaves. So many leaves!

  10. Your workmanship and the stitching is really neat. I can imagine the amount of leaves you have to rack.

  11. Hello,

I love your pretty leaves, well done. we live next to a forest, we would constantly be raking leaves. They continue to fall. I hope you are feeling better now. Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy new week!

  12. That is a lot of leaves to rake and haul off. I haven't even made a dent in the leaves here. The trees are still covered in green leaves. Wonder why applique sounds so complicated to me! I don't understand about the freezer paper. See why I gave up trying to make quilts. I am going to start sewing squares together to make a simple quilt. You do such pretty work.

  13. We decided not to pick up leaves this year. Our country hired a landscape company to pick them up but the weather has been so whacked out the leaves have not all fallen yet and will sit on the ground all winter. Terry cut them and blew them to the road with the riding lawn mower. I had a day that I didn't feel to good. I thought I would really be sick the next day, but thankfully I felt good the next day. I guess I dodged the bug, lol. Those leaves look like a nice quiet time project. I think this method of applique is my favorite.

  14. I haven't bought new freezer paper in a while but the last time I bought wax paper, it has changed. The paper is thinner, almost like tissue paper and it won't work anymore holding our burritos together. I make a bean burrito every morning (freeze it in bulk) and microwave it so my son can have a hot meal in the car as he drives to work. The wax paper fell apart and he was eating pieces of it! I have used the Dollar General brand forever but I threw it away. I am shopping around at other stores to see if I can find some that haven't been changed.

  15. Your applique work is certainly worthy of show and tell! It is picture perfect, for sure! It will take awhile to finish, but it will be worth it. And, besides, can you think of anything you would rather do on a cold winter's day? I just let our leaves do what they want to do, and they let me do what I want to do. :~) Sometimes I do mow over the yard again just to mulch them up a bit.

  16. That sounds like a lot of leaves to rake. I used to like raking leaves. A nice fall thing to do. Living here in the woods we don't rake them anymore.

  17. I've done all the leaves I'm doing until spring. It seems like you can never get them all, and let's face it, they just sit there and wait for you to move them in April. :-) Your hand work is beautiful. I can only imagine how pretty it will be when you start putting it together. I like leftovers and usually cook to have some. But, I much prefer one time and not several - gets old. :-)

  18. We used to take the mower over your leaves a few times during Autumn to chop 'em up & create mulch for the lawn over winter.

It's in the mid 30's here this morning. It'd be a good day to work on your hand work which is beautiful stitches, by the way.

  19. I have that fabric and I used to collect all of Makala Dubrosky's fabric. I love her bold colors and designs. You're doing a beautiful job on your applique.
