Can you believe it?

I got this in a text an hour or so ago...can you believe it is her first day of school.  And can you believe that smile  from a kid going to a brand new school where she knows no one?  I cannot imagine feeling like that as a kid going to a new school.  But she has so been looking forward to it.  She is a kid that loves school...has never had a teacher that she didn't love.  And they all love her...

When I would deliver her to school every now and then when she was younger, we pulled up and let her out, and teachers were there waiting for them.    She was always greeted with a hug, or maybe I should say she greeted them with a hug.  But I really think it was just as much the other way.  Just think what a good hug from a kid feels like.

************

I was going to do a post last night, but was too weary.  And glad I didn't since I got the Lorelei photo.  But above you will see our awning.  the dark part is the gutter part   Well, it gets full of  STUFF....and it becomes a mess.  So much so that rather than flowing down the downspout, the water just overflows.

I have been knowing I had to get up there and clean it out, and I tried with my step stool  the other day but it just was not tall enough.  And truthfully, did not feel sturdy enough out there.  So yesterday, I bit the bullet and got out a bigger step ladder.  I approached it one way, but couldn't reach it.  So turned it the other...had Roger hold the step ladder.  I know that sounds overkill and it is, but I am just so awkward since I broke my  leg, but after the first time getting up, I was basically good to go.

What a pain.  There is just enough room to put my hand in and get a small handful of junk....cannot get a big hanful just cause there is not enough room.   And there where the awning is against the gutter part, I just could not reach and get the stuff under that.  I tried and tried to think of something to use...finally thought and had Roger get me just a regular old teaspoon...and not the kind with the long handle for iced tea as that would have been too long.    I was able to push it through and/or reach and dig it out and get it.

I just got tickled thinking about what we use for tools...necessity is the mother of invention.   But it worked and I still have not thought of anything else I could have used.  I still have the front awning to do but am waiting till next week.  It is at least twice as long.

Funny, we built the porch as a deck...was not going to put a roof back on it.  But I could not stand to sit out there without one.  I felt naked.  But with the awning, I spend a lot of time out there...and everyone that comes, well, before Roger had the stroke...we all enjoyed sitting out there.  And still, if our one good neighbor sees us, he or sometimes he and his wife come over and we sit out there and visit...we can keep our 'social distance' just fine.

That is it for now...got to go put on a load of laundry.  I think I am going to make a small meatloaf today.

Hope you are having a good week...

  1. Hello,

Wow, Lorelei has grown up, she is a lovely young girl. I hope she enjoys her new school. My hubby is always complaining about having to clean out the gutters and we recently had gutter protections added on.
They do not work. Take care, enjoy your day!

So thankful you got the back gutter cleaned. What a tedious job. Thankful you were safe but I know it was scary.

  4. Way to go Lorelei! You are a brave woman to get up there to clean that gutter. I don't think I would have the nerve to do that.

  5. Cleaning gutters is the WORST job. That stuff is so yucky.

Best wishes to Lorelei. I hope she has a great year.

  6. Not only can I not believe that school is starting but I can't believe that that is Lorelei! When I first met her and you she was just a baby and now look at her all grown up. I would be having a stressed it if it was me I had to change school and the middle of the year when I was 15 and I nearly had a nervous breakdown and never did get over it for the rest of high school. But then I didn't love school or my teachers. Oh no oh no oh no stay off those ladders so glad you got some of it done but be so very careful. Spoon sounds good to me

  8. Your young sweetie looks so excited and so cute. A darling I’m sure.

That cleaning is a dreadful job but you persisted. Well done!

  9. Your little girl is certainly growing up, and applause to her looking forward to a new school and new friends. You go girl! Have you tried using a hose with a jet nozzle on it to flush out the gutter? When we've hired someone to do it (second floor) that's what they use. And, by all means, be careful on the ladder. We just bought what they call a platform ladder which is a little more stable as we age. :-)

  10. Lorelei is sure getting big - my goodness. Hope she had her mask with her!!! LOL
I never wanted to go to school that badly - I liked it ok - but wasn't all excited about it.

Gutter cleaning is the worst. Did mine last fall and they need it again. Never did the front one over the porch awning done - it really needs done.
    Be careful

  11. I've always loved the first day of school pictures! This one is wonderful - Lorelei's smile could brighten the whole world! I'm so glad she loves school as that just makes it even more fun and with that smile she will make many friends.

Please, please, please be careful getting up on a ladder to clean the gutters. I know it is such a pain of a job and it is also a very dangerous one. Tom just can't get on a ladder anymore and I'm scared of heights so this year for the first time we bit the bullit and hired someone to do it. No, we can't really afford it but as I told Tom the medical expenses would be much worse if one of us fell!

  12. I cannot BELIEVE hoe Lorelei has grown!! She also looks so much older than she is, and still so beautiful. I sure believe you should be extra careful when doing this chore, ladders can be so dangerous! Wish we had a porch or deck!

  13. Cleaning gutters is an awful job. Hopefully yours won't need cleaning again for a LONG time.
It's surprising that school is starting out your way in JULY. Here it doesn't start until after the Labour Day weekend in September. I know if I were in Lorelei's shoes I'd be so apprehensive but she seems full of self confidence. Good for her.

  14. I'm always tickled to see Lorelei. That sweet smile is just the same as when she was small, isn't it? I've always thought that she was just a bundle of joy. She does have the best personality. When we built our cabin, we had a deck on the front. One of the utility guys out here working said, I bet you will have that deck covered within a year. Well, we did. It was too hot to out there with nothing to block the sun. We've enjoyed it being a porch so much more than having a deck.

  15. Lorelei has a beautiful smile - I hope her new school will be a fun place for her. Climbing up and cleaning gutters sounds horrendous to me as I am not good with heights to begin with. Please be careful, Rose.

  16. I almost could not recognize Lorelei except for that sweet smile of hers. She has really grown up so much. Glad to know that you managed to clear the gutter after so much effort. Hope the next gutter will be an easier task. Take care and stay safe.

  17. I've been visiting you since Lorelei was just a little little girl. Time has sure flown by. There is a LOT of debate here in California on whether they should open schools or not. I never enter a discussion about it and am not sure how I feel. It's a sad situation for sure. I can only wonder what will happen to this generation with all the education they are missing.

I hated cleaning our gutters. Even though we put screens over them, a lot of debris always collected in them.
    xx, Carol

  18. Well tell Lorelei that she is lucky to get to go to school. It is hard to believe she is getting all grown up. The schools aren't going to open up at all. Well so far that is what is said today. Our governor wants everything shut down probably forever. Let them terrorize the big cities but heaven forbid we let the kiddos go to school. It does not compute. My one daughter always cleaned the lower cutters but now she won't. I did have a service come out and get all the way high gutters.
    Well take care

  19. I do not think getting someone to hold a wobbly ladder while you climb up is overkill - it is being safe!

  20. She looks so grown up and so happy. Coleen wants so badly to go back to regular school. She hates doing on-line school.

  21. Hoping Lorelie has a great school year! So happy to see She is going in person. Most Arizona schools are starting with online learning for perhaps at least the first quarter.
