Treasures

These are diaries from my husband's great grandmother.  There were more in the possession of his grandmother but we do not know what happened to them.    I would give anything to have them.  It is just little bits from her day to day life.

I don't know if you can tell what it says there in the upper left-hand corner, but it says 21 below.  There were several days in a row where it was anywhere from -18°F to -21°...they lived in Wisconsin.  Not Indiana.

I made 3 more of the Economy blocks yesterday...

Again, nothing planned.  Just finding scraps that were big enough.

I am finding it hard to stop making them.  But I really do not want to make a full sized quilt with blocks that finish 4 inches across.   My original thoughts were to maybe make a small quilt 3 blocks across and 4 blocks long.  It is apparent that it is going to be at least 4 blocks across and 4 long...maybe longer.

I need to get in there and clean the room up.  Lorelei is coming this weekend.  The other morn she texted and said she was coming over this weekend.  She proceeded to tell me she had got another hoodie and wanted the band cut off...was that bad.  I told her no...that was fine.

But I have stuff everywhere, cause along with making these little blocks, I have been cutting 2 1/2 inch blocks from scraps that are big enough for a future project.  So it feels like a tornado has been through.  So guess I will go get busy on that.

  2. The blocks are just lovely.
The journals are true treasures. I have 14 my Mom filled up and have tried several times to read them. I still can't do it without crying - she passed in 2001.

  6. The diaries are precious. It's too bad you don't have a sewing room where you can just close the door, but I'm sure the cleaning up will be worth it for Lorelei's visit. I hope you have a great weekend. ❤️๐Ÿ’•

  9. I love that you have the old diaries, too bad you didn't get all of them. My father always kept diaries (the only male I've ever know who has done that). Unfortunately I cannot read his hand writing no matter how hard I try!

  11. The old diaries are a great way to getting to know more about your hubby's great grandmother. I love your pretty economy blocks. I wish I have access to some scrap materials too. I used to get them from my tailor friend.

  12. after reading this, when i am playing in PicMonkey I will picture you in your sewing room stitching little pieces together. it seems during this pandemic that most of the bloggers are doing sewing projects, like one was using a wooden shuttle making string bags to hang things in. i bet you could dot that. if i can remember who is doing it will send it to you...

  13. Those books must be so interesting to page through. I have my grandmother's high school year book (1922). It is a different perspective to "see her" as a teenager. LOL

Enjoy the weekend with your sweet girl.

  15. So fascinating, I wish one of my grandmothers had written a diary. They lived interesting lives. I am having to tell myself "no" just looking at your fabric is bringing out an old itch to sew. I moved three years ago and I still haven't found my petal to my machine. lol

  24. I wish there were some old diaries in my family but there are none. Almost no pictures either, just a few. It was that desire that encouraged me to break the cycle of silence and start a blog. It is dedicated to my descendants who have yet to be born. My purpose is to share glimpses of life now.

Lorelei will treasure your blog and read every word years from now when her children are older. Keep writing.

  25. Love the colors of the blocks, I was like that making pinwheel blocks, I finally had to say enough already :)
I LOVE the diaries, what a treasure. Would you believe that last month February we had 12 days in a row of waking up to below zero temps. The coldest I woke up to was -21 when I was at a quilt retreat and here at home it was -15. I was very happy to see that cold snap break.
